So after 3 months of conversion time and years and years of dreaming this up, Mama Hoss is on the road!
It has a stove, a sink with gray water tank and fresh water tank. There is a table/booth for working, eating, art making, etc that folds down to a bed for two.
I have ample storage for everything Steph and I might need on a weekender or an extended adventure.
I am very happy with it so far. I had to make a few adjustments after our first trip which was 3000 miles… But nothing to heavy. We slept in 32 degree weather with no heater and it was fine. The insulation/body heat/ multi down comforter kept us warm. I used the space heater w/full ventilation in the AM just long enough to take the edge off, made coffee and oatmeal and we were on our way..
We just did about 1200 miles down to Clarksdale, MS and back with the same great results. I may have already paid for the conversion with the money I saved on hotels…
We are also getting 23mpg with a fully loaded vehicle. The tank is 24 gallons… And the average range is something like 500 miles using about 22 gallons.. super great.
The insulated window coverings work great. They keep the cold out and the heat in – vice versa in the summer. Also add more sound proofing and privacy. We slept in rest areas, Walmart Parking lots, on the street in New Orleans and chilled during the busy juke joint festival and let me tell you having this can to get away is amazing!
The fold down bed is actually pretty comfy and very cozy. I have the seat cushions, a layer of foam padding, an additional sleeping bag and then two layers of down to keep warm for winter. In the summer we can use that extra blanket for padding. It is like sleeping in a womb, very quiet and cozy.
Steph likes to chill in there when I’m playing a show or festival when a little quiet time is needed.
We made our way on a Thursday morning.
Headed South on I-57 toward Memphis.
Mama Hoss has a 500+ mile range to a tank of diesel so she can go much longer than a human can without a break.
We made a few stops, made lunch and coffee and chilled a bit.
I played a show at Newby’s in Memphis that first night which was fun.
We took our time getting down that way.
We crashed at a Safe location in Memphis and got a nice start the next morning.
